AuthorU Members: Are you a Giver … or a Taker?

This past weekend, many in the AuthorU Community, participated in a one-of-a-kind marathon on writing … as in comedy. Hollywood master of comedy writing and coach Steve Kaplan came to Denver when we asked him if he would. It was a Comedy Intensive workshop … many of us didn’t realize that it would be a full-blown comedy writing workshop as well.

Yet, it had EVERYTHING to do with off-the-charts A-Game writing. Are you an A-Gamer? Are you really good at sequencing; set up your story; revealing your facts and solutions? Do you think you could do it better? The reality is that every one of us can write better; develop our characters better; reveal a plot better; deliver solutions to problems that our expertise can resolve for readers; and of course, so much more. Kaplan challenged us as we took from him. Now it’s our turn to use his gift and write them forward.

From Steve Kaplan … it was a Huge GIVE to AuthorU. For those of us who committed to be there, we were TAKERS … and we would be GIVERS in our writing and other presentations with the vast amounts of information shared.

One of my take-aways, as I looked around the highly engaged room while Kaplan’s presentation was delivered in was: where were YOU? I mean, we video for our members who are remote … away from Denver for the day or live out of the area and can’t physically attend … and who register to participate. And, by the way, that costs money to deliver as well.

Yes, where were you? Choosing not to get training from an A-Gamer for less than $100 for an entire day … someone who A-Stars and Performers pay mega thousands for an hour of his time … and you could get him for less than $100 for an entire day?

Each year, AuthorU works hard to deliver a variety of programs for its members. The Comedy Intensive was on the AU schedule for over a year. Nine months of the year, Saturday Mornings delivers in-depth workshops on a variety of topics. Several months throughout the year, Tech Tool Boxes are delivered that focus on a topic-intensive take-away for limited members to participate in so plenty of one-on-one time is available to fully learn the tools focused on. Weekly, a podcast is delivered along with teleconference coaching. And then there’s the three-day Extravaganza that brings in publishing service providers and national experts for workshops and the amazing Draft to Dream Book Competition. In other words, AuthorU GIVES. And those of us on the Board do it gladly … wishing that something like AuthorU had been on our radar when each first started our publishing journey.

So … here’s my question for you …  really, our question …

  • What are you GIVING back? Think about it.
  • Are you only a convenient taker, picking just something that you think might benefit you or your book? AuthorU wants to deliver multiple tools and ideas that will do just that—not everything we offer will be the perfect fit all the time … but lots will.
  • Do you understand that your participation, your energy, your experiences, your spirit are what makes a living community … the AuthorU Community? It’s why we really want to see you at our events and programs; to take advantage of them and at the same time, share your experiences and seeds of wisdom with other members.
  • Or, do you just want to TAKE?

Your Suggested Call to Action:

Participate Show up: we can’t deliver the high level of programs we do if only a few register to participate. April, May, and June programs are planned. Saturday programs are the first Saturday of the month. July, August, September (because of the Extravaganza) and December are bypassed. Other events do occur during the month (podcasts, Tech Tool Boxes, Author Mentoring Mondays free coaching)
Participate AuthorU is a nonprofit … it needs help from volunteers.
Participate Refer your writing and authoring friends to join … Membership adds are critical for any associations survival and trivial.
