During the PublishingAtSea.com cruise, ace publicity expert, Joan Stewart the Publicity Hound pushed a variety of hot tips. Included were:
1. Authors need to create top-quality free content that others will want to share. And make sure you have live “share” icons on your posts that allow for easy and no-brainer sharing with your followers.
2. Who, Who, Who … you must identify early in your publishing game just “who” your target market is. Then set up a strategy on drilling into it. Joan reminded us that author’s target markets are beyond just book buyers. Don’t forget the media and journalists. What about your competition?
3. Expand your visibility horizons. Do you have a YouTube channel? How about creating a Group on LinkedIn that you moderate and embraces your expertise? What about a Podcast? And, of course, don’t forget a Blog and other social media options. Cross-promote them to make it easy for anyone to find you and reach out.
4. Make sure your Signature is on your email is complete. Add your tagline (you do have one, yes); your website; key social media outlets; your book title; what else? And you may need multiple signatures … we authors often wear different hats. I have one for Publishing at Sea, Publishing, Author U, Personal, and Directions to my office.
