Pitching Tips … think “Formula” when it comes to the Media

Have you thought about creating your own fill-in-the-blank formula for pitching your and/or your book to the media. Designing to grab and hook a producer’s or reporter’s attention, they usually work … the hiccup is when a breaking news type of disaster is in play. Then, media will be directed toward whatever the event is.

Several years ago, AuthorU had Alex Carroll spoke at the AuthorU Extravaganza on how to pitch to the media. He was a proponent of “formulas” … and had sold hundreds of thousands of his books via radio shows as a guest. His door-opener was pitching using a short sentence with a grabber to producers. His secret was to use numbers, expressive adjectives, keep it short and always follow-up. Digging into my old notes, I’ve created a few revisions to start your noodling.

Pitch Formula #1
  “What ______ never taught/tells you about ________.”

And here are a few examples of how you might apply it:

Sample Pitch:  “What your new boss never told you about the
the massive turnover that has just occurred.”

Sample Pitch:  “What healthcare providers never taught you about the
hidden disaster in your body for every 5 pounds you gain.”

Sample Pitch:  “What motivational speakers never tell you about the
phony lives most of them live.”

Pitch Formula #2

“______ time bombs that are set to go off in/at
your __________ unless you do something to stop them now.”

And here are a few examples of how you might apply it:

Sample Pitch:  “5 time bombs that are set to go off in your family finances
unless you do something to stop them now.”

Sample Pitch:  “9 time bombs that are set to go off in your new
computer unless you do something to stop them now.”

Sample Pitch:  “3 time bombs that are set to go off in your home
unless you do something to stop them now.”
